Le seul groupe français qui ait vraiment marqué les Anglais à l’époque fut Little Bob Story. Je les ai vus pour la première fois dans la salle bondée du Dingwalls, un club de Camden Town.
On était en 1977 et à Londres le rock vibrait partout. Les punks, souvent, ne jouaient pas très bien. Leur but était bien sûr de sonner le mieux possible et d’être les meilleurs, mais seuls quelques groupes tiraient leur épingle du jeu. Or ce n’était pas souvent le cas et seule leur énergie rattrapait le coup. Et ceux qui jouaient bien ont vite émergé du lot.
Il restait aussi toute une flopée de groupes qui jouaient du « pub-rock ». La plupart étaient plus âgés. Ils avaient déjà une longue expérience de la scène et incorporaient les grands classiques du rock dans leur set. Nous aimions descendre quelques bières dans un club et écouter des combos comme Docteur Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Ian Dury et Little Bob Story. Ils avaient beaucoup d’énergie et étaient vraiment d’excellents groupes de rock qui ne pouvaient que plaire aux punks que nous étions.
Quand Little Bob Story a commencé à jouer, je me suis approché de la scène et j’y suis resté jusqu’au bout du concert. Bob, un petit gros, une boule sur de petites guibolles, hurlait tout ce qu’il savait. On aurait dit un jeune Rod Stewart. Sa voix était géniale. Il chantait juste et bien. Derrière lui, un jeune Asiatique talentueux martyrisait une Gibson Les Paul noire, pendant qu’un mec plutôt punk plaquait des accords avec une énergie inouïe. Je suis resté bouche bée à regarder le Chinois qui nous envoyait non-stop des riffs de pur rock’n’roll. Il était extraordinaire. Le Dingwalls a dansé toute la soirée et, finalement, Little Bob a joué le morceau que tout le monde attendait : « All or Nothing ». On s’y croyait. On fermait les yeux et on avait les Small Faces devant nous.
À la fin, je me suis débrouillé pour discuter avec le groupe. Depuis ce jour-là, je suis resté ami avec Bob et Ginger qui, plus tard, s’est suicidé d’un coup de fusil dans la tête, nous laissant très malheureux.
